There are quite a lot of comments so I'm unsure if someone else mentioned this, but there should be a menu where you select why a mnemonic is not useful. I can think of the following options: Inappropriate, improper mnemonic tag, irrelevant, incorrect kana/kanji reading, and "other" (with the option to write a short description on the reason for selecting "other")

I am also in favor of removing "incentives" such as coins, though it would be cool if consistently helpful users received a profile badge or something similar to show their involvement. (This is completely optional.)

Another thought, and sorry if it means more work for you kao_worry.png but I think it would be very helpful if there was an option to see the mnemonics for vocabulary as you learn the new words, kind of like when you learn new kanji you can see the mnemonics right away. That way you can get a better idea of what will help you remember the vocabulary before the quiz. They're super helpful for a lot of learners and I think it would be more beneficial to see a mnemonic before you get the new word wrong in the quiz instead of after. If it wouldn't be too much trouble I would love that option! kao_sparkle.png

You can see them! Go to menu > settings > search for "note".

Ok everyone! I wanted to start getting some data so I can see what I'm dealing with.

Please see this page: https://jp.renshuu.org/index....

It will be made a widget later once it's polished up.

It DOES save all data that you send in, but it does not act on that data yet. I plan to first see what kind of consensus we get on these things. So please answer seriously :)

It's very simple (no rewards) - one note at a time, three buttons. Tap a button, get a new usage note (mnemonics only).

Please give it a try.

Ah, that becomes tiresome very quickly. A lot of them would be okay with a little work, but they’re so shoddy. Aren’t people embarrassed to have their usernames associated with stuff like this?

There were a few that I labeled not acceptable simply because I didn’t understand the reference and was afraid it might be 忌み言葉.

Honestly, I am just confused on what some of these mnemonics are trying to accomplish, so I keep hitting "unsure." They could possibly be useful to someone who shares the mnemonic creator's line of thinking, but definitely not me. Now I understand why the mnemonic acceptance process has become public kao_worry.png

The process does get tiring after a while. But every time I react to one, I get another one. So, if I want to stop, I have to "leave it on read" which seems rude somehow. (As in, look at it, but not respond.)

Basically, I'm encouraged to keep going, but my motivation will lag as I go on, so the quality of my judgement will go down over time.

Perhaps it could offer them in batches of 3 or 5 and give you a little pat on the back somehow (maybe with a cute Kaochan image) if you finished the batch. It could also give you the opportunity to load another batch if you wanted, or you could stop there.

You can always open the dictionary to do more research on a term. Click the dictionary icon again when you’re done and it will take you right back to where you were again.

I like how in settings you can hide selected definitions and some of them are set to hide as default (slang, vulgar, etc). Maybe you could do a similar thing with usage notes? Add another button to mark as potentially offensive or something (bad words, references something potentially triggering) and they if they are, don't show them unless the user has the setting off? That way new users won't see usage notes like that but they could still be included if lots of people like them? Just an idea, but I think this way of marking usage notes is good kao_sparkles.png

I'm going through the test site, and I wish there was a way to suggest small edits to some of these that I'm reviewing, like adding dictionary links to other words when the user didn't add them.

I felt a similar sense of frustration.

It's the weekend, so a few quick notes:
1. Keep in mind that this is a quick and rough interface so I could start collecting data and see what kind of consensus (or lack thereof) we're getting. I have no doubt that I'll add things to make it easier and more rewarding to use. Additionally, this is being set up on top of a huge backlog because of my recent illness. So if and when this gets going, there will not be that much of a backlog on any given set of days. At the moment, it probably does feel "endless"

2. Not planning on allowing community edits to other usage notes. That's simply too-big a can-of-worms to open with managing edits, trust, notifications on all of that, and a lot more.

3. I believe that the overwhelming majority of contributors are doing so with the intention to be helpful. Maybe they're 14 years old, or maybe they don't have the time or interest in putting as much time into them as others. That's *fine*, and is the freedom that renshuu was built around.

If anyone feels that it's ok to personally disparage contributors, your simply need not participate.

No one is suggesting that users should be allowed to edit each other’s work. If people really want to do that, they can copy with changes, just like before.
We’re just frustrated. And we have new appreciation for the work you’ve been putting in behind the scenes up until now.

Alright, already the second one has an English typing mistake, should I rate that as unacceptable? Is there gonna be a comment field when i press that?

Right now, no comment fields. I do not typically punish for small spelling mistakes if you still get the meaning of the mnemonic.

As for feedback to the user, I am split on this, but I'm forming something out in my heads. Concerns (and benefits)

1. If the usage note validation system is too cumbersome, might drive down participation

2. If a note is rejected, there are two reasons: either it's just not right for renshuu, or it could be right if small changes were made. I'm not sure the first one needs to be sent to them. As for the second, perhaps if it was something like this "it was rejected, and at least x people marked the same reason (it would have to be a dropdown, and not a text field), then send them a "we think your note has potential, but please consider making this change: ________"

I most likely won't have much time to do more on this due to the holidays, but I'd like to give you the initial stats I've gotten.

So far, 70 notes have been marked by 5 or more people.

Given a threshold of 2/3s (66.6%):

1. 40 of them would be accepted ( # of accepted / (# of accepted + # of unaccepted) > .66)

2. Only 21 of those would be accepted, though, if it requires .66 of total votes INCLUDING "not sure".

3. 20 would be rejected (when not considering "not sures"), but only 6 would (when including not sure).

The average "not sure" rate was 30% across all 70 notes.

To put this another way, if we remove unsures from the percentages, 61 of the 70 have a 66.6% majority in one direction or the other. If we include them, though, that drops to 27, meaning that 34 (roughly 50%) of them have enough people saying "huh" that it needs me to check on the notes, at least until the system is more mature and we have a trust system built in to weight the votes of other users.

Well, 27 of 70 is not that bad for a start.

I believe giving the option for feedback in a dropdown menu would improve those numbers greatly.

Mostly I clicked unsure when I came across an mnemonic that explained the kanji of the word, that was grammatically/spelling wise problematic or that was not really a mnemonic in my opinion (like explaining the difference between なおる and なおす) but would be helpful under a different tag.

In comparison to typical voting systems, requiring a two-thirds majority of all votes including abstentions is a very high bar. 21+6 out of 70 doesn’t seem at all unreasonable considering.

However, since I suspect Michael is going to have a hard time giving up final authority anyway, it may not matter. Just sorting submissions into buckets for him to go through is going to make his job easier.

Here we have five obvious buckets:

  • 21 strong accept
  • 19 weak accept
  • 10 not sure
  • 14 weak reject
  • 6 strong reject

If I have to do a final check in the end, then the system itself has no value - making the decision itself takes almost no time, but reading the mnemonics and looking at the terms is where the time sink is. So I definitely am aiming for a system where I can spend my time on the non mnemonic notes, kanji mnemonics (although these are probably easier to validate), sentence notes, and eventually grammar ones.

What I'd like to do now is this: if we have a way to send comments back to the user, it'll need to be a selection from a fixed set of responses. I'd love some help in making a list of those.

A few that come to mind in the last few comments are this:

1. Wrong language

2. Wrong note type

3. Missing dictionary binding for words

What else? Keep in mind that these are for notes that are close enough to approval that it's worth sending it - I do not think we need to generate a response system for ones that are definitely getting rejected.

- Bad grammar

If we have a system to "semi-reject" notes, it would be a good opportunity to ask to rectify grammatically fuzzy or awkwardly phrased notes, that would otherwise be fine.

I don’t find those comment choices to be very clear. First, as a new user, I don’t know anything about dictionary binding. Based on previous comments, I’ve read on this thread, a lot of times new users provide a lot of good mnemonics. If that’s the case, probably a lot of them also have no idea about dictionary binding. So instructions would need to be included in the notification. I don’t like the use of “wrong” in the wording, because that’s going to discourage people from participating. Perhaps something like, “Please select a different note type.” But again, there’s going to need to be an explanatory key to teach new people what belongs in each category. Wrong language is too general. Is there a misspelling in the Japanese? A misspelling in the English? Did the user misread the pronunciation of the word? Does the wording just need to be clearer? I don’t know what “wrong language” people found when they completed the trial, but this sounds vague to me.
