The dictionary translation just says "to set a net". But does that only refer to "throwing out a net for catching something" (e.g. fishing)? Or would it also be used in a context like "setting up a computer network"?

I'm not 100% sure of this, but I'd go with the dictionary and only the 1st meaning should hold (assuming kunyomi usage). Computer network is usually noted as ネットワーク, not only. That kanji's onyomi usage is usually combined as a suffix with other kanjis to denote specific networks, e.g. , , , etc. Did you see any usage of this expression w.r.t. computer network setup?

According to Wiktionary, also is used to refer to "network" or "the Internet (connection)". So I was wondering whether it could also apply in that regard. I only noticed the word because it's currently in the translation checking queue for German. And if there are multiple uses, I'd like to distinguish those in the translation because otherwise "to set a net" can be quite ambiguous.

I'm pretty sure it's almost exclusively about "physical" nets (wire racks, fishing nets, bug nets, sports nets). I'll look around

some more. I agree with ナンセンスユーザー, I'm around 99% sure it's not used for computer networks.

You're looking at the Traditional Chinese meaning, as a bound morpheme. (Computer Network)

There's a few Japanese words that use the on'yomi, but I can't find anything having to do with computer networks.

網膜, 通信網, 情報網 (closest)

Found this in a government document from 1998 - (computer networks)

It's a cool piece of Korean/Japanese modernisation history, but it's not used in modern IT contexts anymore.
