Hi everyone,
On the main overview page at the top there is a counter with "terms" consisting of words, kanji, grammar and sentences, each with their own respective counter again.
I noticed that all the hiragana/katakana (which you learn at the very beginning) seem to count as "words", is that correct? If so, is there a way to "fix" this and remove them from the words counter? I don't believe the letters in an alphabet should be counted as vocabulary/words per se.
Another idea would be to single them out with another, separate counter "Kana" or so? No idea how hard that would be to realize, though..
Best regards,
Steve
"Words" is a vague umbrella term used to denote anything that's not a sentence, kanji or grammar. I don't think you can "fix" it. It even includes custom terms like 宝飾職人のオーブ (from a game I play).
Actually, it might be more accurate to say they are grouped by schedule type.
I can see where you're coming from, I just don't think it matter much to most people.
Edit: You can probably just "forget" them and that would remove them from the count. If you really wanted to, that is.
Fun fact kana is a syllabary not an alphabet. I assume Renshuu calls it that for the sake of simplicity.
I absolutely agree that probably not a lot of people care but some may! I'd just like to be able to say (or know) "I know/learned 2000 words now." without that including hundreds of Kana and particles and so on. How can i "forget" them, as you put it?
The "letters in an alphabet" part of my message wasn't referring to Japanese, more like if I learned English from scratch, I wouldn't say I know 26 words now after learning the alphabet.
Renshuu’s nomenclature isn't very clear, but when they say "Words", that's anything you can put in a "Words" schedule. This includes particles, kana, expressions (like 勉強を怠ける), prefixes, suffixes, and so on.
A good chunk of what's in there doesn't qualify as a "word" going by the strict linguistic definition.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to keep tabs on how many words you've learned, I just don't think that's the main function of that counter (it's more of a list). I'm not sure if there's a way to filter out all of those things, the filters are way too rudimentary for that purpose. I can think of a few imperfect workarounds, but nothing worth the hassle.
If you just want kana gone from the count, I think you can set the mastery level of all kana to "unknown" in tinker mode. You would do it for each of the 4 lists (from Community lists). That should remove them from the counter. I think you'd also lose a good chunk of mastery, but that's up to you.
Disclaimer: I haven't tried this myself, so I'm not sure if that's how it works.
For the record, I'm down for a proper word counter, but that's probably very low on the priority list.
