I've been trying to learn onyomi as I go, but I feel like it's not working. If there's any sort of resource that helps you remember onyomi, PLEASE HELP kao_sorry.png

Incorporating the readings into your mnemonics for the kanji can help. You can find existing user mnemonics and make your own under each kanji in the dictionary.

The best way to learn the onyomi IMO is just to learn many words that use said onyomi. That way your brain will pick up the pattern on its own.

On’yomi are definitely a challenge. A hybrid approach works best for me. Whenever possible I try to both associate each character with keywords and work the reading into a mnemonic.

For example, I know that means fan, and I know that the word for fan is せんぷうき (), so that’s how I remember that the on’yomi is セン. It’s a roundabout way, but it works.
Moreover, look for related characters. In the beginning, each on’yomi seems to be unrelated to the others, but as you learn more kanji, patterns begin to emerge. Be alert for phono-semantic characters like , , and , which become more and more common as you progress.

I like doing the "complete the vocab" quizzes in the kanji schedules. (It's a pro feature, and for me it's really worth having pro if only for this.) It's fun and I also feel like I've learned a lot of onyomi somewhat painlessly by learning the readings for whole 2-kanji words.

This is the first I've heard of this feature. How do you access it? I just tried looking around and couldn't find it (I have pro)

In settings, set currently studying to "onyomi readings". Click on "readings", tick "advanced question types", tick "complete the vocab".

First, don't be in a rush. It's normal if it don't work for now. Seriously, I don't know if you studied on'yomi outside of renshuu but based on your level, I have only one thing to say: don't worry x)

Most people also struggle the same way at the beginning and even if you were able to apply perfectly all the advise here, it won't magically make you remember those damn reading.

That being said, if you don't give up, it will work at some point =p. But, for that to work, you need to slowly study on a regular basis. Without feeling that it's not working. Because that's not true. Main difference between beginners and "advanced" learners is that the latter know that it will work (at some point). Even if they want to bash their head against a wall from time to time (they're just trying to be positive in front of beginners).

And once you're in that mindset, well, just try to apply the tips you hear here and there. Personally, I don't like mnemonics at all but it works for some people. On the other hand, I love learning reading through words and it's like the easiest method for me. So just try what works for you.

Anyway,
ってね

It's the same for me too..reaching N4 japanese and reading all the on'yomi's ( 50% of them basically are きゅう、きょう、ちょう、しょう kao_lazy.png) are definitely a challenge & I look forward to it when reaching N3. and other levels. You just got to have the spirit. kao_fire.png (Ik it sounds obvious and not an answer but even the slightest and the MOST simplest things can cause a BIG change. Just believe and embrace whatever comes your way even if it doesn't seem like it's helping. Everyone's time comes. Just gotta have patience kao_yeah.pngkao_yeah.png )

Weirdly enough, I find funny voices to work.

maybe it works for you too, when first learning a character, read it's pronunciation in a particular weird voice.

i find it easier to recall, maybe not for you, but just an idea
