I am taking the N4 test in December and I was wandering about kanji combinations. Let's say yellow - 黄色。黄 is an N2 kanji (yellow) and 色(colour) is N4. How would this show up on my test. I am just wondering how these combinations work
As far as I know they look at words as a whole. If the word makes sense for that level it doesn't matter that one or more of the kanji is of higher JLPT level. I mean, it's all approximation anyway, there aren't official lists.
For 黄色 specifically, I assume they won't give you furigana. The word itself is marked as N5, so you should know it.
If you look at the official N4 question samples, 便利 doesn't have furigana. The word itself is in the N5 category, so that's probably why.
