So, someone not too long ago finished hiragana as well and asked if they should do katakana. I have the same question, but one of the comments said that katakana is used more, but when I first got renshuu, it said hiragana is more common. So now I don't know who to believe!! Also, is katakana hard and just more to remember, or should I learn it?kao_sparkle.pngkao_question.png

You’ll generally see hiragana more often, but katakana is also very common. Katakana is used for stuff like loan words from other languages, (non-Japanese) foreign names, onomatopoeia, and stylistic purposes. You’ll see it a lot so make sure to study up!

It should be about the same difficulty as hiragana, if not easier. It’s the same sounds but with different characters, and some of them resemble their hiragana counterparts in a way, like せ and セ, or か and カ.

I wouldn't say katakana is used more. It's used for a very specific purpose. I would say hiragana is used more because it's not just used when things are spelled without kanji (and helps with spelling kanji besides katakana), but it's also often used for grammar. Katakana is still the same sounds used in hiragana, and you still have to learn it anyway.

You haven’t “finished” hiragana. You’ve just barely made their acquaintance. It will be a while before they start to feel like old friends. But now that you’ve met, you can start to use them. Learn a few words. Start the katakana. Try out some of the games. All of these will reinforce what you’ve learned so far.
