Questions/Discussion

Would it be right to translate the んですが as "so...", like,
『この自動販売機、動かないんですが』> "This Vending machine isn't working, so... (Can we replace it?)"

That's an interesting translation! However, I feel it is a bit off of the mark, in that "so" feels somewhat presuming of the other person's actions, and this expression is much more reserved, with the が helping to further lesson the "punch" of the request (or whatever it happens to be.)

So, I was watching "Perfect Days" by Wim Wenders and at around the minute 33:00 the assistant of the main character is surprised to see Aya, a girl he's been dating. I think he's using this form in the following sentence. This is what I hear, so feel free to correct me cause you probably know better.

「何！アヤちゃん来てくれたの。ええ、超麗人ですけど、十段階で十だよ。」

Oh, he has this thing of rating stuff "out of ten" btw^^

I wonder if this could be related to the んですが form? Perhaps the unstated part/request would be to spend some time together since she's there to say hello?

I don't really understand this grammar. It says request, asking permission or invitation but most of the examples have neither.

The request/invitation/etc may be implied. (and I will adjust the entry to note this).

So, to use the first one:

お借りした車、調子悪いんですが. -> the request is that you want the car to be fixed, but since that can be inferred, it does not need to be stated.

To me, this feels like a "trailing though..." we sometimes put at the end of English clauses / sentences, to imply that there's more left unsaid, and what's left unsaid is typically a request or invitation.

聞きたいんですが => "I want to ask, though..."
お借りました車、調子悪いんですが => "The car I rented has a problem, though..."
ちょっとお願いがあるんですが => "I have a small favor to ask, though..."
銀行を探してるんですが、近くにありますか => "I'm looking for a bank, though... is there one nearby?"
少し、休みたいんですが => "I'd like a rest a little, though..."

Is んだけど equivalent to this grammar point? I saw it in an (unrelated) example sentence:

今、時間ある？大事な話をしなければならないんだけど。

I would think so? Since it has the same components (んだ/んです and a word often translated on its own as "but"), it's just a less formal version, I'm pretty sure.
